Furthermore, they may be responsible for helping students and other users learn how to use effectively the library’s collections and services. In academic libraries, Bibliographers may serve on committees; hold leadership positions within the library and the general academic community; conduct research; publish; and actively participate in the work of academic, professional, and community service organizations.

Thus, a critical new task for Bibliographers is not just to map the consortium collection but also to ensure that research material desired to supplement the core collection is accessible and available. These responsibilities involve keeping up with coordinated collection development groups, serial cancellation projects, commercial information services, and resource-sharing agreements. Finally, Bibliographers involved in such a consortium need to provide ongoing education and training in technical areas to library staff and be able to explain this “virtual” library to faculty, students, and any other users of the library.
