One of Wincanton's eyesores is finally being demolished!

People in Wincanton are smiling this week with the news that the derelict house adjacent to The Wagtail on the Wincanton Gateway retail park is finally being demolished.

In its heyday the house was an attractive stone building set in its own spacious grounds, and belonged to the Biss family who also owned Anchor Hill Service Station. Eventually the property was sold and became part of the retail park development owned by Hopkins Developments.

Over the years the building had fallen into a serious state of disrepair, later worsened by fire damage. Eventually it was added to the Town Council’s list of designated eyesores.

The work to demolish the building isn't a simple bulldoze and clear job. The stone is thought to be of good quality, so the work will be done in a careful manner to conserve as much of it as possible. It’s expected that the site clearance will take at least a week to complete.

The house occupies one of the last remaining plots on the retail park, and needs to be removed before something considerably more attractive can take its place. Hopkins Developments have said that there haven't yet been any arrangements made with other businesses to take on the final plots, but that the work is being done now simply because all the required machinery was conveniently situated nearby, at their Long Close site that will accommodate their growing aggregate business when it eventually moves from the Tythings estate.

Is it a new prison - must be something of real value inside - shiney razor wire looks very community friendly!
