The Old Time Jazz Band

As part of the Take Art Rural Touring service, Fumi Okiji’s Old Time Jazz Band will be visiting Charlton Horethorne Village Hall on Thursday 12th February at 7.30pm.

A nostalgic sound that crackles with 21st century flair

Fumi Okiji’s Old Time Jazz Band is a joyous celebration of the great tradition of jazz song. “It is unapologetically old time jazz and at the heart is Fumi’s rich, sonorous, contralto accompanied by a stellar band of musicians.

The music is essentially lovingly crafted interpretations of repertoire from jazz’s inception, through the interwar years. The band takes in the blues, New Orleans, black vaudeville, Louis, Ella and Billie.

Fumi OkijiVocalist and band leader, Fumi is accompanied by a world class line up of four musicians; London based clarinettist, Idris Rahman is taking a break from performing with his own band, Soothsayers and from his regular touring with Arun Gosh to come on this Somerset tour.

Ben Davis is the foremost jazz cello in the UK and alongside exceptional guitarist, Stuart Hall, they make a great string section.

Roy Dodds, who plays drums and percussion with many roots and jazz groups completes the band. As well as playing with Jacqui Dankworth, Roy was part of the acoustic pop band, Fairground Attraction in the 80s.

Take Art's Rural Touring service brings high quality professional performances to local venues across Somerset through its rural touring scheme. They believe people living outside cities and large towns should also have access to the best live arts experiences.

Take Art started in 1987 as a rural touring scheme. Now the organisation has grown to run a number of different service areas. The Rural Touring service is a very well-established and successful scheme for Somerset with an exemplary track record. It relies on the partnership between local volunteer promoters and Take Art - by working together, memorable social events are organised in rural areas where people live and meet. These events can help play a vital role in keeping villages alive and vibrant, strengthening communities and improving health and wellbeing.
