The litter bin in Market Place, Wincanton

For some time it has been felt by many that Wincanton could look a lot better, and that all that's needed is a jolly good clean-up. So after many months of discussions and planning by the Town Team, the BIG CLEAN weekend has finally arrived.

Some work has already been completed on the run up to the event, including some pavement cleaning near the Green Dragon. But the main work starts tomorrow morning, Saturday 23rd, when volunteers gather with the sole purpose of cleaning up Wincanton High Street and the surrounding areas. Some of the work will include:

Road sweeping
Digging and planting
Gum removal
Graffiti removal
Power washing
Sign cleaning
Window cleaning
Litter picking
Pavement cleaning

The work will take place between 10.00am and 4.00pm on Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers will be out and about completing the tasks allocated to them. The volunteers include a wide range of people including High Street Traders and folk who simply care about the town in which they live.

Not all volunteers will be able to stay for the entire day, but could instead choose one or more of the following periods:

10.00am - 12.00 Noon
12.00 Noon - 2.00pm
2.00pm - 4.00pm

There is still time to join this merry band. Just turn up and ask what you can do to help. The team HQ will be in the Wincanton Memorial Hall. All the cleaning supplies will be stored there. The Town Team will be supplying tea and coffee for the volunteers on arrival at the start of the day, and on Saturday The Nog is generously supplying a sandwich lunch.

Katie Petre-Mears of the Town Team said that she expects work to finish between 12.00 noon and 2.00pm on Sunday, and that volunteers may then retire to The Dolphin for refreshments and live music.

If you have any questions ring Katie on 07976 234575.

So lovely to see this happening - the whole town looks so much better. Let's hope it remains this way and rubbish finds its way into a bin and not onto the pavements.Well done!
