James Scott, Local Litigator & Consultant Solicitor

James Scott is a Maperton-based litigator and an advocate who has acquired, in the course of over 30 years in private practice, a wide-ranging experience of many aspects of English law. He is the local representaive of Setfords, an award-winning firm of solicitors with a network of experienced lawyers throughout England and Wales.

Setford’s clients are diverse: individuals and businessmen who value the blend of personal service and commercial judgement, be it in the context of family matters, property or employment issues, or in the field of tax and estate planning. Our aim is to combine traditional standards and courtesies with a forward-looking & pragmatic approach, at a fraction of the cost seen in traditional or larger city law firms.

James’ Prime Specialties

Road traffic and transport law, environmental and pollution law, equine law and racing regulatory matters, and dispute resolution including for example boundary, building and contractual disputes and aspects of employment and banking law.

Raised locally, James practised in Herefordshire and Dorset before setting up on his own account in Tetbury, Gloucestershire in 1988, running a general practice that grew over the years.

He sold his business and moved to Crete in 2007 where he continued to practice English law. Stung by the experience of having had a house built out there, he returned to the U.K. in 2010 and joined an old-established Legal 500 firm in Lincoln’s Inn as a Consultant before joining Setfords.

James’ interests include country sports, National Hunt racing, gardening, military history and travel. He is a local Churchwarden and a member of a City livery company. He was Secretary of his local branch of SSAFA for several years and retains an interest in helping Service charities.
