What Cancer Research UK is About

CRUK aims to raise the funds to enable researchers to carry out world-class research in the UK and with partners overseas. Those aims are:

-  To improve our understanding of cancer
-  To prevent, diagnose and treat different kinds of cancer
-  To ensure the findings are used to improve the lives of all cancer patients
-  To help with the understanding of cancer and the progress that is being made.

THE WINCANTON BRANCH OF CRUK has been in existence for fifty years - we are celebrating our Golden Jubilee at the end of the year and the fact that the Branch has raised £265,000 in those fifty years. To achieve this, fund-raising is of vital importance and is achieved by many different initiatives. At the source are individual volunteers and supporters for large national events down to local volunteer committees organising local events. This is perhaps where YOU come in!

The Wincanton Branch carries out a number of events including:

-  Regular Coffee Mornings
-  The Big Breakfast (a national fund-raiser which we do locally)
-  Flag Days
-  Cheese & Wine parties

to name but a few and is always open to new ideas.

Morrisons Supermarkets have designated CRUK as its main National Charity this year for fund raising. The Wincanton Store has given us 4 weekend 'bucket' collections. Watch the Diary for the next one. We always need helpers for these collections and would welcome some new volunteers. If you are interested in collecting we need help for 2 hours on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays (particularly Sundays).

WHO TO CONTACT to join the Branch or to help collect or both:

 -  Wincanton Branch Secretary, Pat Cullen on 01963-31144,
 -  Area Volunteer Manager, Sabrina Sallis on 07918-166172
 -  Wincanton Committee Chairman, Peter Mitchell on 01963-440570

You will be made very welcome and help raise funds for this important charity.

MORE ABOUT CANCER RESEARCH AND WHY FUND-RAISING IS ESSENTIAL

Cancer isn't one single disease. There are more than 200 types of cancer, each with different causes, symptoms and treatments. Over half of these are breast, lung, bowel and prostate. A quarter of a million people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the U.K.   One in three of us will develop it at some point in our lives the risk increasing as we get older. On the bright side, through funded research, new treatments to fight cancers are being developed. However, the time taken from basic theoretical research to placing a new proven drug on the market used to be 15 years. Now, thanks to hard work and dedication, this has been reduced to 8 years. This all costs an enormous amount of money and the research projects have to funded through all stages of this research. CRUK therefore has to commit to long-term fund-raising in excess of £350 million per annum despite credit crunch and recessions. To this end, the Wincanton Branch play their part, however small it may seem in comparison to the national picture, and you too can play your part and joins us.
