Road closure notice at the top of Common Road, Wincanton

[UPDATE: 28-03-2018] The works have now been extended to 16th April, a total of five days excluding the weekend.

Residents and frequent drivers of Common Road will be delighted to learn that Somerset Highways has finally announced their plans to resurface the road, from its top at the junction with High Street to the junction with Common Lane on the south side of the bridge that crosses the A303.

Skanska is the nominated contractor that will complete preparatory works between 26th March and 6th April. During this period some delays may be experienced, and traffic control may be used for safety.

The actual resurfacing is scheduled to take place between 10th and 16th April 10th and 12th, during which time Common Road will be closed to normal through traffic daily between 7:30am and 5:30pm. Somerset Highways has said that residents of Common Road and connected streets who rely on access to Common Road will still be granted controlled access.

The section of Common Road between the planned works and the Moor Lane junction is also in poor condition, perhaps worse; the road camber shows clear signs that it is subsiding towards, and into the drainage ditches either side. As this lower section of the road is used much less frequently it could be quite some time before it gets similar treatment.

Perhaps Wincanton Museum would be interested to preserve some of the road's original surface.

If you have any questions or concerns you can contact Somerset Highways by phone on 0300 123 2224 and they will do their best to assist.
